A Note from the Editor

At the beginning of 2026, the State Bar of New Mexico’s first internal staff meeting concluded with a significant announcement–that, for the first time in over a year, there would be an issue of the Bar Bulletin in print.  However, it wouldn’t be just any issue–it would be a standalone issue aligned with and commemorating the nation’s 250th anniversary.

Six months of determination and dedication later, the finished product has arrived, representing over 250 years of New Mexico legal history and the legacy woven in that time by the very community behind the legacy itself.

I am deeply grateful to have had the opportunity to come together in collaboration with a group of talented and like-minded individuals with a deep passion for creativity, history and the law. From State Bar Staff to the New Mexico Supreme Court to the authors featured in the publication and beyond, the Bar Bulletin: Commemorative Edition was a truly collaborative effort, defined by the passion that was collectively poured into its making.

The Bar Bulletin: Commemorative Edition is, at its core, a tribute. Over centuries, New Mexico’s legal history tells a uniquely compelling story. This year’s anniversaries, including the nation’s aforementioned 250th and the 140th anniversary of the State Bar’s founding, offer a moment for reflection on the legacy of New Mexico legal history and the community behind it. The Bar Bulletin: Commemorative Edition is that reflection.

While no acknowledgment can fully capture the contributions of every individual and institution who helped make this project possible, please know that your support, expertise and generosity are deeply appreciated.
