In alignment with the United States of America’s 250th anniversary, the State Bar of New Mexico is preparing a special commemorative edition of the Bar Bulletin to be published on July 4, 2026.

This once-in-a-generation issue will not be structured as a traditional Bar Bulletin issue, but rather, a commemorative, historical publication exploring 250 years of legal history in New Mexico. Through a carefully structured narrative, it will examine the development of New Mexico’s legal institutions and the evolution of the legal profession within the broader American context.

This special edition is intended to be revisited well beyond the anniversary year.

Active State Bar of New Mexico licensees will receive a printed copy of the publication by mail. A digital edition will also be made available.

A special Limited Edition of the Bar Bulletin: Commemorative Edition with exclusive content will be available to purchase. See more information about the Limited Edition here.

Step into a defining moment in New Mexico’s legal history. This essay traces the 1886 founding of the State Bar of New Mexico—decades before statehood—as a pivotal step in transforming a uniquely blended legal system shaped by Spanish, Mexican, and U.S. traditions. From the complexities of land grant adjudication to the push for professional structure and stability, it explores how law in the territory evolved during a time of profound change. Marking the State Bar’s 140th anniversary alongside the nation’s 250th, this piece offers a compelling preview of the Bar Bulletin: Commemorative Edition—a richly detailed, museum-style journey through 250 years of legal history that continues to shape New Mexico today.
